Why one backup copy isn't enough: Building true data resilience

    For years, backup success was measured by a simple question: Did the backup complete? Today, that question is only the beginning.

    Modern businesses face ransomware, infrastructure failures, natural disasters, human error, and other events that can disrupt access to critical data. A successful backup matters, but resilience depends on having recoverable copies and recovery paths that are not all exposed to the same point of failure.

    The difference between backup and resilience

    A backup creates a copy of data. Resilience is about making sure recoverable data remains available when you need it most.

    Even reliable infrastructure can experience unexpected failures: hardware components fail, sites can go offline, and regional events can affect critical systems. If your only recovery copy depends on one device or location, an incident affecting that resource can make recovery more difficult.

    That is why established approaches such as the 3-2-1 backup rule emphasize maintaining multiple copies of critical data and separating those copies across different storage locations or media. The goal is simple: avoid allowing one failure to become a data-loss event.

    Why an additional copy matters

    Redundancy is ultimately about reducing the concentration of risk. If a backup appliance, storage system, site, or region becomes unavailable, an independent copy can provide an alternative route to recovery. This is especially important for customers with demanding recovery objectives, compliance requirements, cyber insurance expectations, or a low tolerance for downtime and data loss.

    Not every workload requires the same level of redundancy. The right architecture depends on business impact, recovery objectives, risk tolerance, compliance needs, and budget. What matters is understanding where copies live, which failures they are designed to protect against, and how recovery will work if the primary path is unavailable.

    Redundancy works best in layers

    A strong data protection strategy is a set of layers designed to give you multiple ways to recover. No single technology eliminates every possible failure scenario. Layering durability, off-site replication, independent copies, geographic separation, and recovery testing helps reduce the chance that one incident can take away every recovery option at once.

    So, along with redundancy, organizations should consider encryption, access controls, backup verification, retention, and tested recovery procedures. Multiple copies are most valuable when they are secure, healthy, and actually recoverable.

    Protection against deletion. Redundancy also means protecting against the loss of data itself, not just access to it. AirGap technology is built into every system in the Axcient Cloud from the very first backup and cannot be turned off. When data is deleted, AirGap routes it through a safety archive before permanent removal, providing a critical window for recovery in the event of ransomware, accidental deletion, or malicious action.

    Storage durability. Backup storage should be designed to tolerate component failures and preserve data integrity. Within Axcient-hosted vaults, storage disk redundancy in x360Recover reduces dependence on an individual disk within the storage infrastructure.

    Independent recovery paths. For appliance-based x360Recover deployments, the local appliance can provide a first line of recovery while replicated data on an off-site vault provides another path if the appliance or customer site is unavailable. 

    Geographic redundancy. For eligible US-based partners using Axcient vaults, Geo+ in x360Recover can create a secondary copy of restore points in a geographically separate Axcient Cloud region. This adds protection against a site-wide or regional event affecting the primary location.

    Pave a path to greater data resilience

    Axcient x360Recover from ConnectWise gives MSPs multiple ways to add redundancy tailored to each client's needs. Rather than forcing every workload into the same architecture, partners can choose the protection layers that fit the risk.

    1. Off-Site replication to a vault

    With appliance-based x360Recover, protected-system recovery points can be replicated from the customer appliance to an off-site vault. The vault can be hosted in the Axcient Cloud or in your private Cloud. If the local appliance or customer site is unavailable, replicated vault data provides an off-site recovery path.

    2. Multi-vault options for additional redundancy

    Fo an additional independent copy, x360Recover supports multiple vault replication destinations. Documentation gives you the flexibility to use self-hosted private Cloud vaults, Axcient-hosted vaults, or a combination of both. For example, an MSP can replicate to an Axcient-hosted vault while also maintaining a copy in its own private Cloud environment.

    This approach can reduce reliance on a single backup destination while giving MSPs more control over where recovery data resides. It is an especially useful option for partners that want to combine the operational convenience of Axcient-hosted infrastructure with an independently managed copy in their own environment.

    3. Geographic redundancy with Geo+

    For US-based partners using Axcient vaults, Geo+ in x360Recover provides another option for workloads that need protection beyond the primary region. When enabled, Geo+ creates an additional copy of restore points in a geographically separate Axcient region. It can be enabled at the client, appliance, or protected-system level to apply the additional protection where the business case warrants it. Geo+ can be applied to both direct-to-cloud deployments and BDR appliances.

    4. Local Cache for local data availability

    For direct-to-cloud deployments, Local Cache provides another useful layer in your recovery strategy by maintaining an encrypted, compressed, and deduplicated local copy of unique backup data blocks on directly attached or network storage. During recovery, x360Recover can access available blocks locally before retrieving missing data from the cloud, helping dramatically accelerate recovery when every minute counts. Local Cache also performs automatic data verification and can self-heal missing blocks during subsequent backup cycles.

    While Local Cache is not an independent backup and still relies on the cloud vault for recovery metadata and authentication, it gives you another locally available source of recovery data alongside their cloud protection. Although Local Cache is not a geo-redundant copy and should not be considered a replacement for geographic redundancy, it does provide an independent, local recovery source along with automatic data verification, self-healing of missing blocks, configurable retention management, and health monitoring and reporting back to the vault.

    Proactively protect data integrity

    Redundancy only matters if the copies you depend on remain healthy and recoverable. Because our priority is ensuring you can recover when it matters most, x360Recover performs periodic integrity scanning across our cloud storage to verify that stored data remains available and intact. These integrity scans detect silent data corruption, sometimes called “bit rot.”

    If corruption is detected, the storage system can automatically repair the affected data from a healthy copy. This ongoing process helps us identify and address integrity issues before they become a recovery problem, providing another layer of confidence that the backup data you depend on will be there when you need it. This level of engineering commitment is reflected in how Axcient’s cloud is designed: to deliver up to 10–11 nines of durability, with a calculated chance of data loss of approximately one in 10 billion per system per year.

    AutoVerify adds another proactive layer by automatically validating the recoverability of backup snapshots and helping correct issues before they affect a restore. This patented technology goes beyond confirming that data was captured; it provides verifiable proof that a business would be ready to fully recover and continue operations after an incident by testing data recoverability, filesystem integrity, OS integrity, bootability, and application health within booted environments.

    For appliance-based backups, when AutoVerify identifies missing or inconsistent data blocks, x360Recover repairs those blocks during future backup activity, allowing the system to self-heal over time instead of leaving hidden integrity issues unresolved. You can move beyond a single layer of “backup completed” to confidence that recovery points are usable when needed.

    Build the right level of protection for each client

    The advantage of a flexible backup architecture is choice. MSPs can align protection with the importance of each workload instead of paying for or managing the same level of redundancy everywhere.

    When evaluating a backup strategy, ask:

    • How many recoverable copies of critical data exist?
    • Are those copies dependent on the same hardware, storage system, site, or region?
    • Is an off-site or independently managed copy appropriate for the workload?
    • Would geographic redundancy materially reduce the customer’s risk?
    • How quickly can each copy be recovered, and has that recovery path been tested?

    The bottom line

    A backup strategy should be designed so that a single point of failure does not automatically become a single point of data loss. x360Recover provides a path to data resiliency through layered redundancy:

    The right combination will vary by customer, but the objective remains the same: maintain secure, recoverable data in more than one location when the risk warrants it. For MSPs and their clients, that means more recovery options, greater resilience, and greater confidence that critical data can still be recovered when something goes wrong.
